Tiger Bob Williams currently resting in third-place in the season point standings is a veteran driver who is competing in his first full season of stock car racing. You're asking how can he be a veteran, and still be in his first full season of stock car racing?
Before 1973 Bob had almost exclusively competed in supermodified and sprint cars. Williams was a master in the open-cockpit racers winning many main events at several mid-west ovals in his 14 years in modified racing.
The biggest super-modified race of the year is the Knoxville Nationals, in Knoxville, Iowa and Williams was always competitive at that great event, which saw the best in the business.
Through the late 60's Bob netted several 2nd and 3rd place finishes in that $20,000.00 + event.
Over the winter Bob decided to give stock car racing a go, and purchased a 1970 Chevelle from John Anderson the Toledo, Ohio speedster.
He has done amazingly well in his first full year. Bob finished second in the main event on May 20, and came back to finish third in the Coca Cola 100 on May 27.
Handling the mechanical work on the white Number 4 is Dick Witt, of Witt's Automotive, who was associated several years with Fred Whisler .
Another important crew member is Rick Morgan. Sponsors of the 70 Chevelle are: Barlow's Auto Parts, Howard Automotive, D.X. Sun Oil Co., A.P.A. Auto Warehouse, the U. S. Navy, and Stinson Electric.
Stinson's president, Kenny Stoffus is a long-time friend of Williams.
"When I was 16, Kenny and I had my first race car. I'd like to thank Kenny for all his help."
Williams asked the major difference between driving a sprint car and a stock car replied "In a super, when you are beside a car your backend is close to being by him, but in a stock car the backend sticks out much farther, and when it seems you're by a car, you're still beside him."
Bob says the Chevelle is handling exceptionally, but he thinks he needs a little more horsepower from his 427 engine.
The 31 year old Williams resides in Independence with his wife of 11 years, Mary and their 4 boys, Robert C., Jr . 8, Vincent 7, Tony 5, and Shane 3.
Bob Williams has become in short time a bonafide contender, and before 1973 is over, Bob is likely to have a feature win, or two, or maybe more, under his belt.
