1969 Hutchison Nationals Program
Growing up in the 60's and attending all the Merrick Hutchinson Nationals except for the year 1966, which we got there late and it was sold out. Just my luck the year Henry Ellington won. But for some reason my favorite driver of that era was Joe Lehman from Denver CO. I remember Joe using Dry Ice in front of the radiator to help keep the engine cool in the HOT Kansas summer. Joe ran the asphalt in the Colorado area, so the Kansas State Fairgrounds was almost right at home. In 1967 Joe was looking like he might have a chance to win but finished 4th. In 64 he finished 2nd but I don't quite remember that, I was only 10.

Don is one of the Many Nebraska drivers who have tried there skills at the 1/2 mile state fairgrounds track over the years. Several of them came down from Neb. in the 60's and early 70's every year.

Joe Herrera from Albuquerque, drove this #45. Joe and owner Bud Popkes made several trips to the Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas areas in the late 70's, mainly to NCRA races. Joe served as president of the Albuquerque Racing Association. Joe is The father to Johnny Herrera.
Joe is still very much involved in racing owning the 45x.
Side note to the photo: In the background is the super of #42 Fox Temple of Tulsa. This is the only photo I have of The #42 in this color scheme. I believe it was a former Junior Taft super.

This photo was taken at Knoxville Iowa. Johnny "The Golden Greek" Capels drove this car.
Johnny wrote to inform me: "Was built by myself during the winter of 1963-64. It was also owned by me until I came back to run USAC sprints with the Al Unser Chevy(ECCA Special) in March of 1968.
I sold it to Yearwood Electric and Speed Supply of El Paso Texas for Willie Nunez to drive".
